PPNF helped the Clark family put on the Gromfest on August 23 at the Hook. The skies were overcast with small but surfable waves for the contestants. The surfers’ ages ranged from 4 to 17, with short, long, and boogie board divisions. Also, there was a push-in division in which parents helped the contestants catch waves by pushing them into the waves. One of youngest contestant (4 years old) did something that the judges awarded him the waterman prize for saving a fellow contestant's board from hitting the rock after he had caught a wave - he turned and paddled after the board and then put himself between the board and the rocks, stopping the board. This made him wipeout, but saved the board from any ding repair. His father is teaching him the Aloha spirit of surfing! The Groms had fun with a good turnout of spectators to cheer them on. The Night Fighters helped set up and take down the tents, tables and chairs; they also judged, tabulated, emceed, and did beach patrol and water patrol. Thanks to all who helped to run the Fifth Annual Gromfest.
